Stone Mountain Central & Santa Fe Railroad (HO)
Bob models the Stone Mountain Central & Santa Fe Railroad in HO scale. The Stone Mountain Central Railroad was established in July 1944 as a subsidiary of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company. The Stone Mountain Central railroad was built to haul local freight and passengers the 150 miles between Chicago and Chillicothe, Illinois which is the terminus of the railroad. Motive power consisted of hand me downs and some new locomotives and repurposed freight and passenger cars.
As Santa Fe began its transition to diesel locomotives in the early 1950s, Stone Mountain Central followed suit. In the mid 50’s all steam Locomotives were gone due to operating costs and over runs. The railroad continued to receive hand me downs from the parent company.
The Stone Mountain Central Railroad services the General Electric and American Hardware Supply of Chicago, Ill.; A.L. Stone and Son Concrete; Fisher Body Div. Stamping Plant and Sinclair Oil Refinning in Willow Springs, Illinois; Wheller Gravel Company and Champion Packing Company, in Coal City, Illinois; Owens-Illinois Manufacturing Company and Centennial Mills Inc. of Streator, Illinois; and Commonwealth Edison in Toluca, Illinois. The Railroad has remained solvent to the current day.
The layout 25' X 30' and is powered by Digitrax DCC.
